For some reason, the issue of copyright terms was all over my Twitter feed earlier this week.
I’m certainly opposed to the discussed idea of reducing the term to 30 years; comics and characters from Tom the Dancing Bug would already be lapsing into the public domain — while I’m still trying to have a career with it!
But the current law provides copyright for the lifetime of the author plus 70 years for people, and 95 years from publication for corporations, which I think is way too long.
I tweeted the below comic and this: “Disney's relentless lobbying to extend the term of copyright and keep its properties out of the [public] domain is ironic; its empire was launched and then reinvigorated by re-imagining public domain properties like Snow White, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast”
It happens that this certainly relates to this week’s comic. The six Dr. Seuss books being “canceled by the Left” are simply being taken out of print by Dr. Seuss Enterprises L.P., the copyright holders. Long after Dr. Seuss’s death, that entity remains the private property holder of the Intellectual Property and has the perfect right to decide which of their assets to keep in publication and how to manage their brand to maximize profits. That’s American Capitalism.
When (and if) Disney’s lobbyists ever allow these kinds of properties to go into the public domain, conservatives can find, publish, and cherish as many of Dr. Seuss’s antiquated, racially disturbing caricatures as they want.

And the past few days of the GoComics Super-Fun-Pak Comix page have featured comics from this installment (from 2003)…
…and this one from 2004:

That’s it for this week, friends. Thanks for reading.
For your enjoyment, below is a picture of Otis the puppy (right) celebrating his birthday (five months old today 🎉) with a new friend. I suspect this picture is way too cute for this Newsletter, and I apologize.
Yours Indeed,
