Republicans are apoplectic over Dr. Seuss getting “canceled.” In fact, the private owners of the Dr. Seuss intellectual property have simply decided to put just a few of his minor books out of print for now, which is their perfect capitalistic right.
The last time Dr. Seuss was in the news, it was because an unused (and incomplete) manuscript had been found by these copyright holders, and they had the work completed, illustrated, and published, as What Pet Should I Get?
This was about the same time the Harper Lee estate published an abandoned draft of a pre-Mockingbird novel that depicted a character named Atticus Finch as a racist segregationist.
I’d like to “cancel” posthumous draft-publishing. But, hey:
Private Property and Capitalism!
